What Is Event Tagging?

Event tagging lets you group events under meaningful tags, like "Product Features", "Feature Category", "Campaigns" or any other tag name, to better understand user behavior and product usage. These tags can be used across Coho's platform for segmentation, playbooks, and analytics.

How to Create Event Tags

  1. Access the Event Tagging Rules Page:

    • Navigate to the Event Tagging page from the side menu.

  2. Add a New Tag:

    • Click on "Add Rule".

    • Enter the rule's name and description (optional)

    • Select the "event tags". You can choose from previously defined tags or you can create new tag. A tag is a combination of a tag name and tag value, you can use Coho's predefined tag names like "Product Feature", "Campaign" etc. or you can create your own tag.

    • Select the event category (e.g., Usage, Email) you want to tag.

  3. Define the Tagging Rule:

    • Set conditions for the rule using key-value pairs.

    • For example, tag all usage events with the name "event1" with a tag "Product Feature: New Feature"

  4. Save and Apply:

    • Save the rule to start tagging events based on the defined conditions.

Viewing and Managing Tags

  • On the Event Tagging Rules page, you’ll find a list of all created rules.

  • Each rule displays:

    • Name

    • Mapped Tags

    • Last Event Time - the last time an event matched this tagging rule

    • 7 Days Event Count - the number of events in the last 7 days that matched this tagging rule

Best Practices for Event Tagging

  • Use Coho's predefined tag names

  • Keep Tags Meaningful: Use tags that align with your business goals (e.g., "Feature Usage" for product adoption metrics).

  • Be Consistent: Use similar naming conventions across tags to avoid confusion.

Using Event Tags in Segments and Playbooks

  1. In Segments:

    • To use the tagging in segments you first need to create a calculated property, for example, to create a segment of users who used a certain feature in the last month, follow the steps below:

      • Create a calculated property:

        • Navigate to the User Properties page from the side menu and go to the calculated properties tab.

        • Click on Create new property

        • Fill in the name of the property

        • Choose the tag and select the time frame

      • Now you can use the calculated property in the segment rules logic

  2. In Playbooks:

    • Use event tags to trigger a certain playbook

    • Wait for a specific event tag to occur as a conditional logic in the playbook

    • Use an event tag to measure the success of the playbook
